AfghanistanFrom the very beginning of the U.S. involvement in the Afghanistan conflict the U.S. used military advisors to train and advise Afghanistan police and military units. There were various names for these advising entities and organizations - Embedded Training Teams (ETTs), CATs, Task Force Phoenix, SFABs, and SFAATs. During the U.S. 20-year-long involvement in the Afghan conflict a new term emerged - Security Force Assistance or SFA. This term and acronym are now a significant part of U.S. military docrrine.
