Korea Miltary Advisors

There is long history of the United States using advisor and advisor teams to advise, assist, train, mentor, enable, and support Korean military forces. This effort continues to the present.

In late 1948, the United States decided to withdraw U.S. forces in Korea - leaving the defense responsibility to the constabulary forces of the recently formed Republic of Korea. A small U.S. "Provisional Military Advisory Group (PMAG)" was formed on August 1948 to provide training and logistical support to the South Korean constabulary. This PMAG initially consisted of 100 personnel. by December 1948, the PMAG grew to almost 250 personnel.

On July 1, 1949, the PMAG was redesignated the United States Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea. It was commonly referred to as the KMAG. This renamed organization became a part of the U.S. State Department's American Mission to Korea and was independent of the Army's Far East Command.

After North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950, the KMAG came under the command and control of the 8th U.S. Army, Korea and was redesignated as the United States Military Advisory Group, Korea, 8668th Army Unit. It would later be redesignated as the 8202nd Army Unit on December 28, 1950.
